"Song for You" is the fourth track from Big Time Rush's third studio album, 24/seven. It is one of only two songs on 24/seven that were not written or co-written by the band, being primarily written and produced by Ryan Ogren and Nick Bailey, collectively known as The Blueprint. Rami Jrade and Megan Perry are also credited as co-writers, alongside Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan of the pop duo Karmin, who are also featured on the track.

The song was featured in the fourth season episode "Big Time Cartoon" of Big Time Rush.

Composition and recording[]

The first iteration of "Song for You" was written and produced by Nick Bailey and Ryan Ogren, a songwriting duo collectively known as The Blueprint, at their own Blueprint Studios in Hollywood, California. The pair completed all of the production, programming, and instruments for the track, for which they had intially penned lyrics under the title "Lie, Cheat, Steal".[2] According to their co-manager, who posted as user "FrankGia" on the audio forum Gearspace, the initial demo track was created in only "about three days."[2]

Having pitched the song to various A&R outlets, Ogren and Bailey's track captured the attention of BTR's talent scouts, who "jumped at it almost immediately." As the initial lyrical concept, which was centered around the hook "I would lie, cheat, steal so I could be right next to you", "wasn't applicable" to the vision for BTR's projects, the words were revised, with assistance from co-writers Rami Jrade and Megan Perry.[1][2] Big Time Rush subsequently cut vocals for the song at NRG Studios in North Hollywood, California, as part of the creative process for their third album, 24/seven.[1]

The band was later approached by representives for Amy Heidemann and Nick Noonan of the pop duo Karmin, who were interested in collaborating on a project together.[3] Big Time Rush had previously toured for "a ton of radio shows" with the two singers, where Kendall Schmidt said they quickly befriended them, with both groups casually expressing interest in a future collaboration.[3] Upon receiving a more "official" request, Carlos PenaVega said they "found a song that we thought they could do something cool with," which was "Song for You".[3] Karmin wrote and recorded one version of a feature, but upon request from Columbia Records, who desired a "different option" for the part, they returned to the studio to re-record the verse used in the final album release.[2]

An incomplete demo track of "Song for You" was leaked online in April 2013. When compared to the final studio release, this demo featured spoken reference vocals in place of Karmin's verse, as well as minor differences in production. Additionally, James Maslow sings the refrain "Gotta know I'd do anything to get you to notice me" in the second verse instead of Kendall Schmidt, who sings the line in both instances in the finished product.

The band officially announced "Song for You" on April 29, revealing that it would be included on their third studio album, 24/seven, which would be released on June 11, 2013.[4] A brief music video for the song was also featured in the episode "Big Time Cartoon", aired on July 11, 2013, in which an animated Big Time Rush battles monsters while saving the world.

Lyrics[]

Waking up from another day, and I'm feeling so insa-ane
'Cause ever since I saw your face
I got it tattooed on my brain-ain-ain
Did you know that you came and you got me like this?
'Cause I know you're the one that I want to be with
You gotta know I'd do anything
To get you to notice me
What I gotta do to get you into my life?
I could be your bad boy, or baby, I could be nice
I would give you all the stars
If you give me the night
Come on, aye-aye-aye-aye

There's a million pretty girls all over
But they got nothing on you-ou
Been all around the world and no one gets me like
The way you do-o
Baby, I thought that you should know
None of the rest are even close
There's a million pretty girls all over
But you know this song's for you-ou
This song's for you-ou

Now I got your attention, babe
There's some things I need to say-ay
Like you're the one that I dream about
It's on my mind like every day-ay
(Every day)
Did you know that you came and you got me like this?
'Cause I know you're the one that I want to be with
You gotta know I'd do anything
To get you to notice me

So tell me what I gotta do to get you into my life?
I could be your bad boy, or baby, I could be nice
I would give you all the stars
If you give me the night
Come on, aye-aye-aye-aye
Got my head up in the clouds and I'm walking on air
Want you all to myself and I don't want to share
Where you want to go? 'Cause I'm taking you there
Come on, aye-aye-aye-aye

There's a million pretty girls all over
But they got nothing on you-ou
Been all around the world and no one gets me like
The way you do-o
Baby, I thought that you should know
None of the rest are even close
There's a million pretty girls all over
But you know this song's for you-ou
This song's for you-ou

Now, one in a million, so baby what are the odds
A million miles away but I know this is my song
You know you got the right girl, with the right muscle
Keep you real thin, but won't knock the hustle
I don't want you to want to me, no, I don't want to be wondering
If you want to be with me when the skies get to thundering
I still want my heart fluttering every day without a shadow of a doubt
Baby, all you gotta say is

There's a million pretty girls all over
But they got nothing on you-ou
Been all around the world and no one gets me like
The way you do-o
Baby, I thought that you should know
None of the rest are even close
There's a million pretty girls all over
But you know this song's for you-ou
This song's for you-ou

What I gotta do to get you into my life?

Yo, I've been to London, Tokyo, Paris, New York
And still I've got this one girl on my mind
It's amazing the way she makes me feel
I just can't get over it
It's like I'm living in a movie and I want to fast forward to the best part
I hope when she hears this song, she knows it's all for her

There's a million pretty girls all over

Trivia[]

  • The line "Yo, I've been to London, Tokyo, Paris..." from the demo version of "Song for You" seems to reference an earlier song from Big Time Rush's discography, "Worldwide". As both songs also talk about loving one girl out of a million, it is possible that "Song for You" was conceptualized as a sequel to "Worldwide".
  • During live performances on the Summer Break Tour, Kendall raps the first half of Karmin's verse, and Carlos raps the second half.
  • The version featured in the show is mixed slightly differently from the studio release; James leads the chorus in the show's mix, while Kendall leads the chorus in the album's mix.
